The Festival of Young Preachers PDF Print E-mail

Academy of PreachersREGISTER FOR THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL OF YOUNG PREACHERS

The Festival is an event sponsored by The Academy of Preachers and its growing list of Founding Partners. The second national Festival is scheduled for January 6-8, 2011 in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

The National Festival is designed to showcase and encourage young people who aspire to be preachers of the Christian gospel. Our purpose is to identify these young people and sustain them in their call to preaching, cultivating within them the conviction that gospel preaching is a vocation of great social and spiritual significance and is worthy of their very best. All young people—high school, college, university, and seminary—are encouraged to participate; we are no respecter of persons and therefore reach out to all faith communities: Catholic, Evangelical, Pentecostal and Protestant, male and female, conservative and liberal, and of any ethnic heritage.

Plans are being made for 100 young people to participate as preachers in this second edition of a unique event. This past January, the inaugural festival attracted 107 registrants, 95 preachers, and more than 600 people (in the midst of a bitter ice and snow storm). They came from 21 states and 41 institutions and represented many, many denominations. While the inaugural Festival was focused on preachers primarily from the area within 150 miles of Louisville, this second festival promises to be truly a national event. Registration for the Festival is open to any young preacher regardless of home, work, or school location.

The National Festival functions much like a high school or college speech tournament. There will be multiple venues for simultaneous preaching. The time will be divided into 45-minute segments, complete with prayer, music, introductions, and 2 sermons (16 minutes each). Thus, in a three-hour time slot at a given location, six young people will be featured as preachers.

The Academy highly values the relationship between the young preacher and both a sponsoring congregation and a mentoring preacher. For this reason, registration for the Festival must include: a completed application from the young preacher, a letter of endorsement plus a $100 Festival fee from the sponsoring congregation, and a letter of support from the mentoring preacher that commits the mentor to be present to introduce the young preacher at the Festival. As each young person preaches, senior preachers (many of whom are present to introduce their own protégé/e) will listen and record the strengths and weaknesses of the sermon.

The Festival of Young Preachers is not a competition; at the final assembly, all young preachers who participated in the Festival will be formally inducted into the Academy of Preachers, and thus eligible for all institutional scholarships and also for both the summer preaching camps, the international preaching missions, and other programs of the Academy of Preachers.
